Advanced Nitrox Diver
This course will teach you to utilize the advantages of Nitrox to extend your no-stop limits within the 40m recreational depth range or to use the gas to add a greater margin of safety when diving with air tables or computers.
The IART Advanced Nitrox course covers all aspects of dive planning and calculation allowing you to optimize the best mix for your planned dive and introduces you to the merits of secondary mixes designed to accelerate off-gassing on ascent.
Beyond that this course advances your knowledge and skills needed for wreck diving, wall diving and blue water ascents.
Theory presentations cover:
- Physiological factors, potential dangers
- Dive planning and gas analysis
- Handling of equipment and practical dive conduct
- 4 Open water training dives
The Advanced Nitrox course completes your recreational diver training and prepares you for the step to technical dive training.

- Course:
Open Circuit Advanced Nitrox Diver Level I - Course objective:
This course develops in the participant, the required abilities, knowledge and techniques to dive responsibly with best-mix Nitrox within sport diving and no-decompression limits. - Pre-requisites:
minimum 18 years of age, IART OWND, PADI AOWD, CMAS** or equivalent certification, proof of a minimum of 20 logged dives and a valid diving medical.
- Course content/duration:
All theoretical and practical aspects of diving with various Nitrox mixes. The classroom session reviews the physical and physiological hazards of Nitrox diving, dive planning including best mix, EAD and MOD calculation, equipment considerations for Advanced Nitrox diving and all procedures involved. Advanced diving situations such as wall diving, wreck diving and blue water ascents are discussed in detail. The practical part of the course includes 4 open water dives. Course duration is typically 2-3 days. The open water dives must be carried out by the participant(s) under direct underwater supervision of the course instructor.
The maximum instructor-to-student ratio is 1:4. - Support material:
IART Advanced Nitrox manual, NOAA 02-exposure tables, Nitrox dive planning software such as V-planner, Instructor USB stick and Instructor presentation materials. - Required equipment:
Complete diving equipment, Nitrox dive computer allowing two mixes in range 21-100%. At least one cylinder (min.12 litre) fitted with a regulator, second stage and octopus compatible for use with Nitrox mixes containing up to 40% oxygen plus one stage cylinder fitted with a regulator and second stage compatible for use with Nitrox mixes containing up to 100% oxygen. - Limits:
The maximum depths during training are determining by the MOD of the mix being used. An oxygen partial pressure of 1.4 bar should not be exceeded at any time. Dive duration should not exceed no-stop limits. - Practical skills:
The dives should include proper planning, including an assessment of the dive site, determination of the best mix to be used, gas analysis of cylinder contents and calculation of the MOD; EAD; and CNS-loading. 4 separate dives must be conducted within the MOD of the mix used and within no-decompression limits. The 4 dives should be split over at least two days with 3 dives being the maximum on any one day. The student should record his CNS loading after the first dive and take the residual loading into account when planning the subsequent dives. Accurate log book entries following each dive are a mandatory part of the practical skills. - Certification requirements:
The student must satisfactorily complete a written exam. Once training requirements are met at the Instructor's discretion, it is necessary to submit an application in order to obtain the corresponding IART certification card. In accordance with IART quality control, the student and Instructor are required to fill in the training protocol form. The instructor must retain this form with the student file. - Certification:
